The Mammen style emerged in the middle of the 10th century through a gradual change in the forms of the preceding Jelling style. In this style, the animal figures were depicted in long, ribbon-like forms, while in the Mammen style the motifs “grew” in width, so to speak – they took on more powerful proportions and were less abstract.
In contrast to the earlier Viking styles, the Mammen style also placed more emphasis on floral motifs thanks to inspiration from the Franconian and Anglo-Saxon regions. And so, for example, vines and acanthus leaves – completely unknown in the north! – in depictions in the Mammen style. However, it was not long before the Nordic artists remodelled these unfamiliar patterns into decorative forms – the Ringerike style was born.
